E-Waste Hazards and Solutions

Electronic devices were banned from landfills and incinerators in Wisconsin in September of 2010.

Used electronics (E-waste) contain heavy metals including lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium.  Because of this, these used electronic components are hazardous to the environment and your personal health and need to be disposed of properly at the Brown County Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

E-waste cannot be picked up along with normal household waste. These components can be recycled for further use if disposed of properly.

Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFL’s) also contain small amounts of mercury and must be disposed of at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, or any of these locations.  Though they can still pose a mercury pollution risk, the energy saved by these highly more efficient lightbulbs helps reduce the amount of mercury that is emitted from coal burning power plants that release mercury into atmosphere.

Click here to read more about how CFL's will be replacing incandescent bulbs.
